Special Needs Services FAQ’s

What type of services do you offer through your Special Needs Department?

SADI offers three options for special needs assistance: Day Program, ABA Therapy, and Personal Assistance.

How can I find out if someone is eligible to receive these services?

Eligibility is determined by Department of Mental Health (DMH). To qualify for DMH, the individual must have had their disability prior to the age of 22. In Southeast Missouri, contact the Sikeston Regional Office at (573) 472-5300 to start the process.

If an individual already has a Medicaid waiver through DMH, contact their Support Coordinator to let them know what services the individual wants to pursue. The Support Coordinator will contact SADI to make the request.

Is day hab and day program the same thing?

Yes. Day hab is short for day habilitation services which is also called a day program. A day program is designed for individuals eighteen years of age and older who have developmental disabilities. SADI CARES Day Program is offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The program offers community integration, recreation, socialization, teaches daily living and social skills, and promotes independence to those who attend. Most days are spent at SADI but there are weekly outings to promote education, exercise, and fun.

If an individual is interested in the day program, can he or she tour the facility?

Yes. Anyone interested in attending SADI CARES Day Program can contact the Special Needs Coordinator at SADI to schedule a tour (573) 651-6464 ext. 1252 or their Support Coordinator can request the visit for them.

Is transportation provided to and from the day program?

SADI provides transportation to individuals living within the Cape and Jackson area.

Can an individual attend the day program in summer when school is out and go back to school again in the fall?

Yes. Students who are 18 can do this until they turn 21 when they can no longer attend high school.

Can someone attend the day program part time?

Yes, SADI CARES Day Program offers flexibility to those who only want to attend part-time with a minimum of two days per week required.

What is ABA Therapy?

ABA is Applied Behavior Analysis. This therapy applies principles and strategies to help individuals who have challenges in the areas of behavior, social, and communication skills. Behavior analysts and support staff work with Individuals to change behaviors so they can effectively participate in their community and perform activities of everyday life.

How can someone receive ABA therapy?

To qualify, individuals need to contact their Support Coordinator who may request a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) which must be completed by a Behavior Analyst. Eligibility is then determined by Sikeston Regional Office.

Can someone receive day program services and ABA therapy at the same time?

Yes, however, in order to receive ABA therapy, individuals must be enrolled in SADI CARES Day Program. The dual enrollment helps individuals receive one on one therapy as well as therapy while they interact with their peers in a social setting.

What is Personal Assistance (PA)?

PA includes assistance to individuals as they perform their activities of daily living. Individuals receiving PA would not be able to complete routine tasks without this assistance due to their disabilities. PA also provides support and incidental teaching to assist individuals so they can participate fully in their home and community environments. PA is provided in the individual’s home, family home, and in the community, and always in the presence of the person receiving the assistance.

Can a family member provide PA to someone?

Yes. A family member can work up to 40 hours per week for an individual. SADI will train the family member on the Individual Support Plan, the goals and requirements based on their position as a caregiver. Parents of children under the age of 18 or a legal guardian cannot work for the person needing assistance.

What if there’s not a family member who can provide the service? Will SADI help find someone?

Yes. SADI hires caregivers who are trained and receive a background screening through the Family Care Safety Registry. The caregiver will come into the home and provide PA.

How are hours figured for PA?

The individual’s support team will meet and discuss the hours needed and submit the plan of care to Sikeston Regional Office to seek approval. All hours requested are based on the person’s needs, abilities, and supports that are in place.
